about this as a new revenue. president obama says his plan would produce x dollars more than boehner's plan. both of them are talking about extending tax cuts for 98% of the people. but the main loss of revenue to the government according to a current law is. that is why the caller said we need to go over the cliff. i'm surprised that many callers were willing to go over the cliff. she mentioned that would be a chance for a recess, i think that is part of what is going on with people who believe they want to go from the republican standpoint, if you go over the cliff and the tax rates go back up, you instantly thought and the tax base. it also means more taxpayers are paying. instead of having 50% of taxpayers having no liability because their income is too low and because of deductions, you have a higher percentage that are pain and a broader base. you have more people to start sweating out more money from. once you do these spending cuts, then you decide from the standpoint of, we have already cut all this money, what do we absolutely need to add that in. in some ways, the reset wo

, it looked like we were getting closer. boehner offered to raise rates for those making more than $1 million a year. the rate would increase only on the amount you made over $1 million. president obama, who insists on letting the bush tax cuts expire for earners making more than $250,000, at least that's how he presented it during the campaign. offered to let those taxes rise on those making more than 400,000 a year. we're talking marginal rates, only on income above $400,000. by the way, mark, $370,000 a year is what puts you in the top 1%. all of those levels, 250, 400, a million. what's the breakoff point at which raising rates would substantially hurt the economy. >> i think they're coming to a compromise, the president's 400 k, speaker boehner was a million. my guess is they come to an agreement somewhere around $500,000. if that's the break point in the tax increase, i don't think that does significant damage to the economy. i think it's very helpful raise enough revenue to address the balance that mohammed was talking about. and i do think that the chained cpi is a very good way to go

people go on about how obama really believes that the only way to do this is so bipartisan and that he's still waiting for john boehner and mitch mcconnell to become decent. of course he doesn't think that. but he knows that he's not mitt romney saying 47% of the country are people that i have nothing to do with and i don't care about. he knows that he's the president of the people of the united states which includes 47 percent ironically who voted for mitt romney. and so you know, you have to be able to say, well, why is the first african american man to run for the office of president not willing to say as he's running for president, "oh, and by the way i believe in gay marriage in 2008." i get it. it's easy to understand that. and if what that means is that i have to wait for the day that a president says, "i believe in same sex marriage," i'm willing to wait. and i waited and he said it. this man believes what we believe and i actually got a chance to say this to him. >> to obama? >> that, you know, lincoln at one point in the lincoln-douglas was disappointed when douglas made a pa
